An Island Life

Being MAMA bear

July 15, 2016

I’ve been a full time mum now for eleven years. Eleven years. I can still feel the euphoria I felt at leaving my paid employment. I was never faced with uncertainty that perhaps I was doing the wrong thing, it felt right and I embraced and continue to embrace, the challenges that face me on a 24/7 basis. My children and family are my all and I feel extremely fortunate that I’ve been able to spend this time with them. I also take great pride in running my home. I’m the sort of person who will make the bed with my partner still in it, my work surfaces are always clear apart from when that other mum turns up and chances are on a good day, there’ll be some home bakes in a tin. Just dont look in the cupboard under the stairs…

Anyway, in that time, I can say that I have fully and totally absorbed my role within the family. The role of Mama Bear, fierce protector of my three little cubs. But only now, with my youngest at school, am I finding a slower pace. I am slowly reclaiming parts of the old me. The creative part that enjoyed photography. The selfish part that enjoyed eating cake in a cafe with a friend and not sharing a bite. The thoughtful part that enjoyed spending time alone with radio 4 and a sink full of washing up. Dare I say a physical side that enjoyed breaking a sweat on a Friday evening. I’m beginning to catch up from where I left off all those years ago. And it feels good! ? But, first and foremost and most importantly, I am a MAMA and I am immensely proud of my role at the head of my little family unit.

Which is where this gorgeous t-shirt and necklace come in. I fell in love with them both when I first came across Rebekah through her instagram account. A mother of four, the photos of her handmade minimalist jewellery immediately drew me in. Each piece so delicate, so charming. Her blog is a real treat and reading the story of how her MAMA bear necklace came about is both amazing and inspiring. You can read about it here .

I just read this post and immediately went to her website and ordered the Plant Lady necklace. I never wear necklaces but that one felt spot on for me, for this my first year as a pro flower farmer 🙂
